The staff consists of five lines and four spaces. Each of those lines and each of those spaces represents a different letter, which in turn represents a note. Those lines and spaces represent notes named A-G, and the note sequence moves alphabetically up the staff. There are two main clefs with which to familiarize yourself; the first is a treble clef.

The treble clef has the ornamental letter G on the far left side. The treble clef notates the higher registers of music, so if your instrument has a higher pitch, such as a flute, violin or saxophone, your sheet music is written in the treble clef. Higher notes on a keyboard also are notated on the treble clef. We use common mnemonics to remember the note names for the lines and spaces of the treble clef. The bass clef notates the lower registers of music, so if your instrument has a lower pitch, such as a bassoon, tuba or cello, your sheet music is written in the bass clef.

Lower notes on your keyboard also are notated in the bass clef. Notes placed on the staff tell us which note letter to play on our instrument and how long to play it. There are three parts of each note, the note headthe stemand the flag.

Every note has a note headeither filled black or open white. Where the note head sits on the staff either on a line or space determines which note you will play. Sometimes, note heads will sit above or below the five lines and four spaces of a staff. In that case, a line known as a ledger line is drawn through the note, above the note or below the note head, to indicate the note letter to play, as in the B and C notes above.

The note stem is a thin line that extends either up or down from the note head. Most fonts contain a standard collection of characters: letters, numbers, punctuation marks, mathematical symbols, bullets and more. Because the majority of these characters exist on standard keyboards, finding and using them is simple. Tracking down special symbols, such as musical notes, requires the use of a standard but somewhat obscure Windows program.

Click the Windows Start button. Click the drop-down menu labeled "Font" near the top of the Character Map screen. Scroll to find a font that includes the musical symbols you want to view.

Some fonts have alternate versions, called variants; take care in selecting the proper variant. Find the music symbols. Scroll from the bottom up on the list of symbols shown in the Character Map. Less frequently used characters such as musical symbols are farther down the list, often at the very end. Use the music symbols. Once you find the symbol you want to use, click inside its field. Click the button near the lower right-hand corner of the screen labeled "Select.

Insert the symbol into programs like Microsoft Word by using the Paste command. Select the same font in your destination program that you selected in the Character Map utility or else your symbol may not appear.

Sheet music is used as a record or a guide to perform or compose a piece of music. To be able to read this sheet music, one has to study the musical notations, for which, one has to be acquainted with the symbols used to represent the notes.

Given below is a list of the musical symbols employed to write sheet music. Notes are written on a staff of five lines consisting of four spaces between them. The staff is counted from the lowest line upwards. The lines and the spaces correspond to pitches of a eight-note musical scale depending on the defining clef. Ledger or leger lines extend the staff to pitches that fall below it. It is a short line added above or below the staff.

Ledger lines are generally placed behind note heads and are spaced at the same distance as the lines of the staff. Range of notes that go beyond the two staffs are put on extra short lines or between the spaces formed between them.

Vertical lines called bars are used to connect the upper and lower staffs of the grand staff. The vertical bars are used to divide the staff into measures. A single bar line is used to separate a measure. Each bar or measure refers to a segment of time that is defined by a given number of beats and note value. A double bar line is also used to signify changes in key signature, time signature or major change in style and tempo.

A dotted bar is used to sub-divide long measures of a complex meter into shorter segments. A bold double bar or the end line is used to indicate the end of a movement in a piece of music. It is used to signify the end of an entire composition.Musical symbols are marks and symbols used since about the 13th century in musical notation of musical scores.

Some are used to notate pitchtempometreduration and articulation of a note or a passage of music. In some cases, symbols provide information about the form of a piece e.

Some symbols are instrument-specific notation giving the performer information about which finger, hand or foot to use. Clefs define the pitch range, or tessituraof the staff on which it is placed.

A clef is usually the leftmost symbol on a staff. Additional clefs may appear in the middle of a staff to indicate a change in register for instruments with a wide range.

In early music, clefs could be placed on any of several lines on a staff. Musical note and rest values are not absolutely defined, but are proportional in duration to all other note and rest values.

The whole note is the reference value, and the other notes are named in American usage in comparison; i. Accidentals modify the pitch of the notes that follow them on the same staff position within a measure, unless cancelled by an additional accidental. Key signatures define the prevailing key of the music that follows, thus avoiding the use of accidentals for many notes.

A symbol with one vertical and three diagonal bars indicates a sharp with some form of alternate tuning. Time signatures define the meter of the music. Music is "marked off" in uniform sections called bars or measures, and time signatures establish the number of beats in each. This does not necessarily indicate which beats to emphasize, however, so a time signature that conveys information about the way the piece actually sounds is thus chosen.

It usually takes written or printed form and is a conscious, comparatively laborious process.

Its use is occasioned by one of two motives: as an aid to memory or as communication. By extension of the former, it helps the shaping of a composition to a level of sophistication that is impossible in a purely oral tradition.

By extension of the latter, it serves as a means of preserving music although incompletely and imperfectly over long periods of time, facilitates performance by others, and presents music in a form suitable for study and analysis. The primary elements of musical sound are pitchor the location of musical sound on the scale hence intervalor distance, between notes ; duration hence rhythmmetre, tempo ; timbre or tone colour; and volume hence stress, attack.

In practice, no notation can handle all of these elements with precision. Most cope with a selection of them in varying degrees of refinement. Some handle only a single pattern—e. The position of staff notation as the first notational system to be described in this article acknowledges its international acceptance in the 20th century.

As an indirect result of colonization, of missionary activity, and of ethnomusicological research—not because of any innate superiority—it has become a common language among many musical cultures. Staff notation, as it has developed, is essentially a graph. The five horizontal lines of a musical staff function like horizontal rulings of graph paper, bar lines like vertical rulings. In practice, the system is far more complex and sophisticated than this.

The vertical axis of pitch operates to represent melodic contour in music for a single instrument or voice, but, when several staves are combined to form a scorethe principle breaks down, each staff being a self-contained vertical system. Representation of time duration by horizontal spacing is used only in a very limited way. It is in reality made almost redundant because the symbol for a note gives the necessary information itself: not its absolute duration but its duration in relation to the notes around it.

These symbols are as follows; each has half the duration of its neighbour to the left:. A dot placed to the right of a note head increases by half the duration of that note. Such symbols when placed on a staff may indicate relative pitch and relative duration.
